Check what benefits you may be entitled to

Within the first month

You may be entitled to bereavement benefits, help with funeral costs, or a survivor's pension. These are often overlooked.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to claim:

**Bereavement Support Payment:** A lump sum of £3,500 (or £2,500 if you do not have children) plus monthly payments for up to 18 months. Available if your spouse or civil partner died and they paid National Insurance.

**Funeral Expenses Payment:** If you are on certain benefits, you can apply for help with funeral costs. This must be claimed within 6 months of the funeral.

**Widowed Parent's Allowance:** Being replaced by Bereavement Support Payment, but you may still be eligible if the death occurred before April 2017.

**War Pension or Armed Forces compensation:** If the death was related to military service.

Contact the DWP Bereavement Service on 0800 731 0469 for guidance on what you can claim.
