Notify their employer or pension provider After a Death | Funeral Directory
8 Step 8 of 18

Notify their employer or pension provider

Within the first 2 weeks

If the person was working, contact their employer. If they were retired, contact their pension provider. There may be final salary payments or death-in-service benefits.

If the person was employed, their employer may owe:
- Final salary or wages
- Holiday pay
- Death-in-service benefits (often 2-4 times annual salary)

If the person was retired, their pension provider needs to be notified. Depending on the type of pension:
- A spouse or civil partner may be entitled to a survivor's pension
- There may be a lump-sum death benefit
- The State Pension will stop — the DWP handles this through Tell Us Once

Check any paperwork or payslips for the pension provider's details.

What you will need

  • A death certificate
  • The person's employer or pension provider details
  • Their National Insurance number
