Notify utility companies and service providers After a Death | Funeral Directory
9 Step 9 of 18

Notify utility companies and service providers

Within the first 2 weeks

Contact gas, electricity, water, broadband, phone, and TV providers to close or transfer accounts. Keep services running if the property is not being vacated immediately.

You do not need to cancel everything straight away. If the property will remain occupied (by a spouse, for example), accounts can be transferred to a new name.

If the property will be empty for a while, keep essential services running (heating in winter, insurance) and cancel non-essential subscriptions.

Organisations to contact:
- Gas and electricity supplier
- Water company
- Council tax (may already be done via Tell Us Once)
- Broadband and phone provider
- TV licence and streaming services
- Mobile phone contract
- Insurance policies (home, car, life)
- Subscriptions and memberships

Take meter readings on the day you notify suppliers.

What you will need

  • A death certificate (or reference number)
  • Account numbers for each provider
  • Meter readings (for gas and electricity)
15-20 minutes per provider

A notification service can contact many of these organisations for you in one go
