Birds Funeral Services is a family-run funeral director based in Holymoorside, Chesterfield, with a proud heritage stretching back to 1913. The business was originally founded by John Birds Senior, who came from Elton, Matlock, and began as a wheelwright, joiner, builder and funeral director — as was common in the era when local craftsmen undertook burial arrangements. Over more than a century, the business has been passed down through successive generations of the Birds family, each maintaining the same values of caring, personal attention to the local community.
Today, the business is run by John Birds (Junior) and his daughter Liz, who left a career in teaching to join the family firm. Together they continue to serve the people of Holymoorside, Chesterfield and the surrounding areas, offering a deeply personal service at one of life's most difficult times. The premises have been modernised over the years, including the addition of a Chapel of Rest and a dedicated reception area.
Birds Funeral Services offers both attended and unattended funerals, funeral plans through Golden Charter, and operates a 24-hour helpline for those in immediate need. They are members of the NAFD and are committed to transparency, publishing a standardised price list in line with legal requirements.
