E Gill & Sons Funeral Directors has been serving the Newark community and surrounding district since 1915, when the business was transferred to Mr Edwin Gill. The firm's roots stretch back even further, to a mid-nineteenth century joinery and undertaking business. Over five generations, the Gill family has guided the firm through periods of great change, including the challenges of the 1930s Great Depression, and has continually invested in its premises and facilities. The current offices and Chapel of Rest on Albert Street were opened in 1979 and extensively upgraded in 1990, now featuring a private chapel and two interview offices.
In 2023, E Gill & Sons became part of Funeral Partners Ltd, while the Gill family remains actively involved. Fourth generation members David and Simon serve as Business Principals, and fifth generation Ian and Nick have also joined the team. This combination of deep family heritage and professional support enables the Newark branch to offer a comprehensive range of funeral services, including cremations, burials, green and woodland funerals, unattended cremations, and repatriation.
The team at E Gill & Sons is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and prides itself on providing personal, compassionate, and professional care to every family. They can be contacted by telephone at any time or can visit families at home to discuss arrangements.
"I'm just about to sort my own pre-paid funeral with them - so that my Son will have the same comfort that I had."
— Jane Harrison (about Simon Gill)
"She kept in touch regularly which was comforting and reassuring. On the day of the funeral the entire team were friendly, professional, and dignified. My Mum would have been so impressed."
— Fay Lawrence (about Alison)
"Always felt in safe hands, no fuss, just a really professional, personal service at a time when, let's face it, we really need it the most. The larger funeral companies can't and don't offer the personal service that a family business can."
— jonathan battersby (about Nick)
"Jamie guided us through the whole process and helped us to make sure that the funeral went very well and ironically, would have been one that my mother would have enjoyed had she been able to attend."
— Alison Holloway (about Jamie)
"Jamie was somehow always there to inform and support without being noticed! Both my siblings were also in total agreement in the unobtrusive service provided by Jamie who took any worries away during the whole difficult process with quiet confidence."
— Jonny Powell (about Jamie)
"It was as if I had a hug of empathy, assurance & confidence throughout the whole process, that they truly understand mums wishes and that everything would be ok - and it was more than ok, they provided and delivered a superb Service."
— Amanda Gill

Jamie at Gill's Funeral Directors throughout provided the perfect service in every way in preparing us from before the death of my mother in hospital to cremation and celebration service in Lambley and Burton Joyce. Jamie provided a totally compassionate, knowledgeable, organised and informative service, nothing was too much while being unostrutive on the day (and throughout) where everything went absolutely perfect. Jamie was somehow always there to inform and support without being noticed! Both my siblings were also in total agreement in the unostrutive service provided by Jamie who took any worries away during the whole difficult process with quiet confidence, thank you Jamie (if I could give higher than 100% recommendation I would do so). Thank you Jonny P.

Alison was brilliant. From our initial contact through to the funeral she showed professionalism, kindness and understanding. She kept in touch regularly which was comforting and reassuring. On the day of the funeral the entire team were friendly, professional, and dignified. The funeral ran like clockwork and was a beautiful and memorable day, my Mum would have been so impressed. Overall, a faultless service that I would highly recommend. Thank you so very much.

From the outset of a sad and truly emotional journey, right to the end, I can not fault E.Gills Funeral Services professionalism in the handling of my mums service. They gave me time to make decisions, offered advice at the appropriate time, always consulted on delicate matters. It was as if I had a hug of empathy, assurance & confidence throughout the whole process, that they truly understand mums wishes and that everything would be ok - and it was more than ok, they provided and delivered a superb Service.

Really just wanted to thank E Gill and Sons, and Nick in particular for a faultless service for our dear Lisa, much loved sister to my wife and brother in law to me. We’ve had a few bereavements lately, and had to deal with some of the larger funeral companies, but have to say that they can’t and don’t offer the personal service that a family business can. Always felt in safe hands, no fuss, just a really professional, personal service at a time when, let’s face it, we really need it the most. Can’t recommend them highly enough. Many thanks indeed

E Gill & Sons organised my mother’s funeral. Jamie, in particular handled everything sensitively and with total professionalism. We felt that the arrangements were safe in his hands from the start. Jamie guided us through the whole process and helped us to make sure that the funeral went very well and ironically, would have been one that my mother would have enjoyed had she been able to attend.
