S Clarke and Son Funeral Directors has been serving the Newtownards community and surrounding areas since 1918, making it a fourth-generation, independent family business with over a century of experience. Founded by Samuel Clarke and his wife Minnie, the company quickly built a reputation for treating families with dignity and respect. Samuel introduced the first motorised hearse to the town in 1929, a spirit of innovation that continues to this day — the business was the first in the country to power its fleet and funeral services mostly using solar energy.
The Newtownards branch is located at 12 Court Square, where a funeral church was first built in 1970. The premises have since been significantly expanded and renovated, with a spacious, modern funeral church, comfortable family rooms, offices, and additional parking. A 2019 expansion into the adjoining historic 'Flax House' has provided further space for families to meet and make arrangements.
S Clarke and Son offers a comprehensive range of funeral services at the Newtownards branch, including traditional funerals, simple funerals, bespoke funerals, religious and non-religious ceremonies, cremations, and direct cremation. The team is committed to transparency around pricing and to supporting families regardless of their budget, ensuring every loved one receives the dignified send-off they deserve.
"There was a sense of genuine care and compassion throughout the whole process and this was much appreciated at such a difficult time. Cannot thank S. Clarke & Son enough for their efficiency, advice and support during the planning of both my mum and dad's recent funerals."
— Diane McVittie
"They took great care and attention to listen to us and give us time and space to get our thoughts sorted. On the day of the funeral the team had a great manner: so courteous from the moment the chauffeur helped us to the car, then calming at the funeral home and respectful throughout."
— Veronica Roberts
"Nothing is too much. They take the worry out of everything and were two steps ahead of the family's line of thought."
— Jill Dunlop
"There was never any pressure or rush on decisions needing made. S.Clarke and Son made a very difficult time all the more easier with their kind and compassionate staff and they covered everything from dealing with the council, arranging flowers and adding personal touches to the funeral. Mum had a beautiful send off."
— catherine tate
"They even remembered us at the second funeral and did sympathise about the year we had had which did mean a lot. My family were unfortunate to have to arrange two funerals in 2024 for both my father and my mother."
— Joanne Moore
"They guided me through the entire funeral process with such care and support and enabled me to give my Mum the funeral she would have wanted. My especial thanks to Linda for all her support and to Lee for his calming reassurance during the day of Mum's funeral - much appreciated by myself and all the family circle."
— Judith Butler (about Linda, Lee)
