Frank Painter & Sons are Shrewsbury's only totally independent fourth-generation family funeral directors, proudly serving the local community since the business was founded by Frank Painter in 1936. What began as a car garage with a small funeral directors alongside has grown into a well-respected funeral service, now guided by Frank's grandsons Chris and Mike Painter, and great-grandsons Alan and Ben — reflecting the family's deep-rooted commitment to the community across nearly a century.
The firm arranges and conducts funerals all over Shropshire and beyond, offering a comprehensive range of services including traditional funerals, green funerals, direct cremation, religious and non-religious ceremonies, and burials at sea. Their facilities include a service chapel, a private chapel of rest, a varied coffin range, and pre-paid funeral plans. Additional services such as live webcasting, ashes into glass, and stonemasons support are also available.
At the heart of Frank Painter & Sons is a dedication to providing the greatest care, respect, and dignity to every family they serve. Their team — which includes both male and female funeral directors — takes pride in tailoring each service to the individual family's wishes, ensuring that every loved one is treated as if they were their own. The firm has received numerous heartfelt testimonials from families who have praised their professionalism, compassion, and the warmth they bring during life's most difficult moments.
"Ben always kept us up to date and never minded answering our many questions. Nothing ever felt too much to ask and he made the whole process so much easier and less daunting. Our Dad was very well looked after and respected whilst with Frank Painters."
— Jess (about Ben)
"We felt in very safe hands with David. Their support made an overwhelming process feel much more manageable. Would give more than five stars if I could!"
— Laura Mills (about David)
"After the death of my mother, my sister and I had no idea what to do. Chris was amazing and helped us every step of the way. He made an awful situation as easy as it could have been. Everyone you deal with at Frank Painters & Sons has the most caring and sincere manner."
— Teresa Heath-Wareing (about Chris)
"My particular thanks go to Alan who looked after me so incredibly well during the 6 weeks we had to wait for my partners ceremony. Nothing at all was ever too much trouble. I was able to choose a coffin covered in beautiful English garden birds, that was just so so perfect for my partner who loved taking photographs of all kinds of birds."
— Miriam Moorcroft (about Alan)
"The love of my life died very suddenly and Frank Painter helped me through the very challenging process of planning a beautiful service for him. They took good care of him and of me and my family and have even become friends. Good people doing sensitive and honourable work."
— Fran Stockley
"We met Ben at the nursing home at the time of his death. Ben arrived really promptly on a cold snowy night. He treated us with the utmost care explaining the process in such easy steps so that we could take it all in. We will never forget his kindness on that night."
